Planked Wood Wall Art - Butterfly

Get ready creative people.

Get a bundle of lath and your wood burner out

and lets make

a large rustic, wood planked butterfly!

Wouldn't this be a fun piece for your porch or patio area.

It would be so cute in a girl's bedroom.

I have mine in the entry.

Although it looks as if it were cut and pieced,

I actually used my wood burner to get the effect.

I thought it was time saving but achieved the look

I was going for.

I was inspired by Olive and Grain

You should see their beautiful pieced reclaimed work.

I cut a piece of utility panel 30.75" x 48".

I laid out my lath boards and used power grab adhesive.

Put weight on your boards and let dry overnight.

The most time consuming effort

was in calculating measurements,

and I've done that for you ,

so it should go smooth!

Here are the pattern marks.

Measure in from the sides and mark with chalk.

These are the lines you will use to wood burn.

After the wood burning,

I gave the whole piece a light brown wash.

Now for the fun paint part!

I used greys, blues, off white, ivory,

and even a metallic gold for one board.

You know you want to try it!

I sure hope you do.

It's so good to have your hands busy.

Trying new and different techniques

gets your creativity flowing!

Enjoy,

How to Paint a Pet Portrait

Hey creative friends!

I like simple brush strokes

and rustic paint styling.

I thought I would share

how you can use a simplified tracing method

to achieve a textured pet portrait.

Here are some cute beach dogs -

First start with your pets photo

and you will need to put it into photoshop.

Brighten the photo and give it a lot of contrast

so you can clearly see your pet's  face.

Create a new layer on top of the photo

and trace your pets outline and features.

Print onto paper and transfer onto your board.

I did a chalk transfer onto brown washed boards.

Using the easy dip and drag paint method,

with cardstock, drag paint across boards

around the outline of your pet.

You could certainly try this on canvas too,

but won't have quite as much texture.

I used a brush for the sky.

Then I chalked in the finer details of the face.

Now you have  a good outline

and can use a brush or cardstock

to fill in areas with color.

You will need finer brushes for the eyes.

Even if you don't have a photo of your dog on a beach,

it would be fun to put him on a beach!

Hope you give it a try!

Deb

Arrow Art

I'm loving the arrow trend!

So Emily and I made a project from the book, "Hand made walls".

Using lath and fence pickets,

we made our arrows 48" long,

and glued and nailed the boards

onto a piece of utility panel.

We gave it a brown wash

and used card stock to drag blue and yellow paint

across the boards.

What a fun summer project!

Deb
