Side Table Makeover - Cottage Chic

I love my job.
 
Painting furniture and signs.
 
Usually I am doing something custom.
 
So it is a real treat to take the time
 
to paint something for my home,
 
in the colors that I love.
 
 
 
 
And it's a love story ta boot.
 
A little TLC for this guy -
 
 
 
 
Homeless.
 
Discarded.
 
No hope.
 
What?!  no hope?!
 
I can see you in there,
 
you little beachy, cottagey, shabby, lovely.
 
 
 
 
There you are.
 
 
But your journey wasn't easy.
 
Ridding you of the wasp nests, mud, and cobwebs
 
meant a good "gut" cleaning
 
and spray paint under and inside.
 
Ahh...fresh.
 
Now for a real makeover
 
we gave you a new top - very trendy you know -
 
the planked board look.
 
Lath, at 29 cents a piece will be our wood of choice.
 
 
 
 
Then some Minwax Early American Stain.
 
And I know this breaks the rules
 
but I use a little acrylic Raw Sienna with it.
 
 
 
 
Now for some ironstone white milkpaint.
 
And to really make you cottage cute,
 
lets put a board across the bottom
 
with a textural basket.
 
wow, you are shaping up.
 
I could even love you like that.
 
(I think that's a song)

So let's go back
 
to the first kiss brush stroke.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
blending in white
 
 
 
 
Clear wax entire piece.
 
 
 
 
We're going to live happily ever after
 
(or until I get another paint makeover idea)

    So pretty and perfectly cottagey! I have a question for you though... in photo the wood that you added didn't look flush, then in the final picture it was perfect. What did you use to make the wood straight and flush on the sides?

    Hey Rasonda - I just used my jigsaw to cut the ends off. My Dad got me my first saw when I was early 20's. I didn't know how I would use one all of the time!
    Maybe the lumber yard could cut it for you too. ?

    I love this! I love the board across the bottom too - that's brilliant. Now, you wrote that after you used stain, you used acrylic. Why is that "against the rules"?

    Oh, about the "breaking the rules", when I base painted with stain and acrylic that's mixing oil and water. (doesn't really mix) But I like the way it goes on my wood and dries quicker.

    Oh Deb, I've missed seeing your posts! I'm so glad to be caught up. This one was worth the wait. You really gave it quite the transformation! Poor little thing, just waiting for some love, and it sure found the right place. I LOVE it! Are you sure it's a boy?? :) I do have a question, you said you added some acrylic Raw Sienna to the Minwax stain. Did you mix the two together to paint it on? You're so creative, you always seem to know just what to do with a piece. Great job, as always!

    This is so so perfect! I saw this on Better After & had to come comment! I have an antique sewing table that I am turning into my desk, but can't figure out how to go about covering up the big hole in the middle because the wood is so beautiful that I (shockingly) don't want to paint over the entire thing! I may have to just add a colorful top & leave the rest to be dark brown. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Hi Melissa -
    I used the white milk paint on the bottom of the table. I used bottle craft acrylics on top. I added white to all of my colors to lighten. You could use any kind of white on the bottom of the table and sand off a bit for the worn look.

    Sure - you can use liquid nails adhesive and then tiny nails on each end. That will hold it. Even wood glue would do.

    I used such a variety of acrylic craft paints I don't remember. But I added white to all of them to keep the light beachy feel.

    Hi Deb, I have just found your blog, I am about to paint a wooden planked table just like this but with vibrant colours. I am wondering if you are able to tell me please, when you paint the top panels, how do you achieve the distressed look of the wood coming though on the edges, and not just a solid block colour? I would love to know! :) Thanks in advance!

    Hi Emily!
    Sounds like a fun project.
    Use a chip brush - maybe 2-3" . They are cheap and they have an airy bristle bunch - not heavy.
    If you want a darker brown base - paint that first, then apply your color on top - lifting your brush gradually before you get to the edge.
    Then, after you apply your coats of color, go back with a dry brush of brown on a chip brush and pull in from the edges. Dry brush just means that you dip your chip brush into the brown and wipe it off on a paper towel so there is very little paint. This keeps a light and natural effect on the edge.
