Even though I paint almost everyday,
I'm still amazed at how paint can transform
old tattered furniture.
It's a quick fix that will extend the life of a piece.
The best part is
that it can be done at little cost.
(except for the elbow grease spent sanding and prepping!)
My neighbor is fixing up a bedroom.
She has two old dressers that need some love.
We're going to treat them
to this rich red layered look...
The first dresser is a vanity with mirror.
Here is the Before and After:
The other dresser is a tall chest.
Here is the Before and After.
I wish I had pulls to show you
on the tall dresser.
Darn, that's the part that's the most fun...
finishing off a piece with it's hardware.
Many times my customers want to choose their own
after it's painted.
She will have fun picking those out!
You might remember that I used
this color on the Nautical Compass Dresser.
I also used it on the Texture Blast Table.
This red over black paint finish
is one of my favorites.
Love to see the paint layers.
Beginning with a coat of Rustoleum Black Primer Spray,
then following up with one coat of
Next I'm ready for the red.
I like to use two colors of red.
Using the Rustoleum Colonial Red
and another bright red,
both in gloss,
dip one side of the brush in bright
and one side of the brush in Colonial.
Try keeping strokes straight back and forth,
not in a criss cross motion.
Remember to leave some black show through.
Nice.
You want those warm undershades.
This paint will dry quickly
so you can work at a good pace
and this will be a speedy project!
(again, except for that part about the elbow grease..
but that was my husband's elbow... : /
This is really such an easy paint technique
that gives lots of beautiful layering.
Red over Black.
Is there a Red Redo in your future?
Happy Painting!

I so much want to have one (just one!) piece of red furniture. It's my favorite color, but I know that it tends to be overwhelming if too much is used in one's living environment. Still, having something red and cheery would really, really satisfy me. Your technique with the black undercoating takes care of toning it down a bit. Maybe there WILL be a chair or dresser I can sneak into the decor. BTW, I did use your dip and drag technique on a small project I was working on, and it turned out beautifully. Thank you for sharing your ideas. Best Regards.
ReplyDeleteI love hearing that you tried the Dip and Drag! and that you like how it turned out.
ReplyDeleteTruly, that is why I started to blog ...to share paint ideas with other DIYers. It's so good to get your feedback. Thank you, Cynthia!

These look great - I hadn't really thought of combining different paint colors...I have a few furniture projects in store and will consider this! It's very dimensional.

Hi Stacey,
ReplyDeleteThe red layers really well over a dark base. It's so rich too.
Thanks!
Love that! The gorgeous black peeking through the vibrant red is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous transformation! And red is one of my favorite colors.
ReplyDeleteA good blog always comes-up with new and exciting information and while reading I have feel that this blog is really have all those quality that qualify a blog to be a good one.
ReplyDeleteWow, Deb, I’m not a fan of red, but I can’t keep myself from loving all these! Red furniture works well in almost every setting – from vivid to natural. I love most what you did to the dresser! I’m sure it can add a cozy feel to any room. :)
ReplyDeleteOooh I love this technique. Do you have any advice for doing this over black cabinets? Should I seal the paint after the red is applied? just curious.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting this redo. I took your tips and advice and redid our piano. It turned out GREAT! Thank you SO much!
ReplyDeleteGina! That is such great news. Now you have a beautiful red piece for your home.
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing!
Deb
Deb, What color is the second red you chose to use? Thank You.
ReplyDeleteMary M
Hi Mary -
ReplyDeleteI have used several different bright reds. I think on that one it might have been apple.
Hope you have a fun paint project!
Deb
Deb, I have just painted red over my daughter's black furniture. Did you do a poly coat to finish it off? Thanks, love your tips. Does not take much to get my creative juices flowing.
ReplyDeleteMary
Hi Mary!
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to use a sealer over the red indoor/outdoor paint. Usually, the semi-gloss finish is very durable.
But I have gone both ways. Sometimes I have used an acrylic sealer.
Hope you like how your project turned out,
Deb
I love this!! I would like to keep my cost down, and I was wondering if I skipped the black spray primer, and put two coats of the Rustoleum Ultra Cover on, would I get the same results?
ReplyDeleteYes = that would definitely work. just skip the spray and go straight to black brush on.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Deb
Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteIs the second red a latex paint or does it matter?
ReplyDeleteAll water based paint - at least one of the reds should be a semi-gloss because of the way it goes on. It just makes the layering nicer. I love to use the two can reds. But you can use another water based for the 2nd color - even a craft paint.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great project!
Deb
I did something like this with an old white changing table. I did not prime the table at all. I used a brush to paint the table a rustic red then I used a dark mahogany stain to go over the red paint and it came out great and it lasted fairly long, well as long as I had it. Just sharing. This looks awesome and will try with a better quality of wood furniture piece in my home. I can't wait to try it. However, I probably won't use the high gloss but maybe a semi-gloss. Thank you for your tips.
ReplyDeleteI was looking for a technique on painting my side tables black and red and I absolutely love this. Would the technique work even If I just use one red or does it have to be two different shades of red?
ReplyDeleteHi Gladys!
ReplyDeleteSure, one red would work :)
I'm just in such a habit of layering lots of colors for depth.
Hope you enjoy your project!
Thanks! Off to Home Depot!
